Death and Peace and Love
This fall, I took my wife to a conference on a college campus. I don’t often get a chance to walk along and think. Memories flood back as the season changes and I am met with my eventual reality.
As I walk through the cemetery where Charles Kuralt is laid to rest, early morning light filtering in, a passing visitor to my final destination – chipmunks scurry, ancient oaks shed this year’s solar collectors, and squirrels prepare for the winter. I am reminded of death. And of peace. And of love.
The sweet smell of rotting leaves draws parallel to granite forms of decaying lions, once proud.
We will all meet with this eventuality. Though our final resting place may not be so picturesque and full of smells and sounds. The time our consciousness has to interact with the earth will soon end.
Our legacies will burn out, each at a different pace. How those who continue after us are able to cope with our sudden passing and handling of that legacy is our responsibility. Prepare, so they can remember the walks they took with you instead of the responsibilities you leave behind.
I offer this sentiment, not to be morbid, but to help you find peace and prepare while you still have a chance. The choice is yours. Take it.
Protect the ones you love, so that when you find your peace, those who survive can more easily find theirs. At your death, help them find peace and love.
